Power supply and distribution

Data centers are experiencing increasing challenges due to power consumption.

Grid congestion, where demand for electricity exceeds the network, threatens the reliability of data centers according to Brendan de Graaf, director of Lyv Energy Management Solutions. He emphasizes the urgency to intervene immediately, without waiting for government measures, given the current power problems at companies.

Martien Visser of Hanzehogeschool Groningen and Gasunie shares that the current power consumption of Dutch data centers already represents 2.8% of the national power need. This percentage continues to rise due to advances in technologies such as IoT/IIoT, Industry 4.0, 5G, VR, AI and the influence of Bitcoin. This leads to significantly more data traffic and requires more energy, especially due to activities such as video streaming, gaming, mining (Bitcoins) and online communication. For example, to complete one Bitcoin transaction, approximately 1,449 kWh of energy is used, which is approximately equivalent to the electricity consumption of an average household for approximately 50 days.

Mulder-Hardenberg offers advanced power distribution units and rack PDUs to gain and maintain control over power consumption in data centers. Vertiv solutions include not only power distribution but also remote monitoring and management, ensuring optimal performance and regulating power consumption.

The IMD (Interchangeable Monitoring Device) is a hot-swappable unit and can be upgraded and adapted to the latest technologies without having to replace entire power strips. Hot-swappable IMDs provide the ability to upgrade monitoring without disabling critical IT equipment.

Reduce cost of ownership and optimize ROI by replacing or upgrading the IMD instead of the entire rPDU.
